AUDIO // Căușeni mayor detained for bribe of 89,000 lei

Căușeni mayor has been detained by anti-corruption officers for a bribe of 89,000 lei, money allegedly demanded in exchange for awarding a construction works contract. Law enforcement officers carried out searches today at Căușeni Town Hall, including in the mayor’s office and those of several employees of the institution, as well as at the headquarters and offices of several economic agents targeted in the investigation.

According to the National Anti-corruption Center (NAC), the criminal investigation actions are being conducted within the framework of a large case initiated on acts related to abuse of office, passive corruption and active corruption, in which the illegal actions of some employees of the local public administration in Căușeni and of an economic agent are being examined.

Thus, the mayor of Căușeni is suspected of having demanded, accepted and received undue financial means in the amount of 89,300 lei, which represents 50% of the value of a contract previously awarded by the local administration to a company.

At this stage of the operation, documents, data storage devices and other evidence relevant to the criminal case have been seized from the scene. So far, two persons have been detained – the mayor of Căușeni and the representative of an economic agent. Both are to be escorted to the NAC for questioning and placed in the pre-trial detention facility for 72 hours.

The investigations continue under the procedural guidance of the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor’s Office in order to establish all the circumstances of the case and identify other persons involved.
