Prime Minister about situation on Dniester River: Latest data show positive trend. Priority - health of citizens

The latest data show a positive evolution of the situation on the Dniester River, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu said today at the beginning of the Government meeting. The official assured that field works are continuing, with the priority being the health of citizens.

“We are going through a complicated period, especially for the citizens in the north of the country. The polluting substances that have reached the Dniester represent a real danger and we cannot ignore this. The data we have show a positive trend. The values are decreasing compared to the first measurements,” said Munteanu.

The official stressed that for the Government, the priority is the health of citizens, even if some solutions may not seem the most comfortable.

“We know how difficult it is to live without water, but between discomfort and a health risk we clearly choose to protect people. There are different types of solutions; some are good, but cannot be applied immediately. Others take time. Some solutions are not very comfortable, but they are effective, and we choose the solutions that are almost 100% certain to protect people. That is why we are taking action, we are installing filters. Seven dams have already been installed on the Dniester. We are intervening in the field, working together with our colleagues from Romania, whom we thank for their prompt help,” said Munteanu.

The Dniester River was affected by contamination with a petroleum substance following an attack on a hydropower plant in Ukraine by Russian forces on March 7. The pollutant was discharged into the watercourse and began to move towards the territory of the Republic of Moldova, endangering aquatic ecosystems and water sources for riparian communities.

The authorities reacted immediately, mobilizing intervention teams and implementing complex measures to limit and monitor the pollution. These measures included the installation of filters and barriers to capture petroleum substances, continuous monitoring of water quality, and coordination with local authorities and emergency services to prevent the spread of contamination.

Under these conditions, the water supply in several districts in the north of the country has been suspended.
