Moldovan parliament expands eligibility conditions for providing housing to participants in Chernobyl accident relief works

Participants in the Chernobyl accident relief works will have increased chances to benefit from state-provided apartments, after the parliament has voted, in the first reading, a draft law which extends the eligibility conditions for this right.

The draft aims to amend the Law on the free transfer of housing in the building located in the Chisinau city, on Alba Iulia Street no. 91/3, meant for persons who participated in the liquidation of the 1986 nuclear disaster. Although there are 80 available apartments in the concerned building, only nine have been allocated so far, as most of the submitted applications did not meet the conditions provided by the law.

To unlock the process and extend access to housing, the draft provides for granting these apartments by way of exception to individuals who: own an inherited home that does not meet the technical or sanitary standards; participated in privatizing a home along with three or more other people.

According to official data, in early 2023, only 1,733 out over 3,500 Moldovan participants in the Chernobyl accident relief works liquidation were still alive and 1,604 of them were suffering from various degrees of disability.
