Moldovan government puts forward Domnica Manole, Sergiu Litvinenco for Constitutional Court

Prime Minister Dorin Recean today informed that the government would approve, at its next meeting, the appointment of Domnica Manole and Sergiu Litvinenco as judges to the Constitutional Court (CC).

The PM noted that both candidates had the professional competencies and legal training necessary to ensure compliance with the Constitution and to exercise their mandate impartially.

“As a judge of the Constitutional Court, Domnica Manole has consistently acted to ensure constitutional control and guarantee the supremacy of the Constitution. As head of the juridical commission for appointment and immunities and Minister of Justice, Sergiu Litvinenco initiated reforms to create an independent judiciary that regains its good name and citizens' trust,” said the prime minister.

The judges of the Constitutional Court are appointed for a six-year term, are independent in exercising their mandate and are subject only to the Constitution.

Under the new law on the Constitutional Court, the government is responsible for appointing two CC members, starting three months before the expiration of their term, which concludes on August 16.

The Constitutional Court is made up of six judges: two are appointed by parliament, two - by the government, and two - by the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM).
