Moldovan president conveys condolences to families of Crans-Montana fire victims

President Maia Sandu today sent a message of condolences to the families of the victims of the tragic fire at the Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland.

“My thoughts are with all those affected by the tragic fire at Crans-Montana. I extend my sincere condolences to the families of the victims. Moldova stands in solidarity with Switzerland,” said Maia Sandu.

About 40 people died in a fire at a bar during a New Year's Eve party at the Crans-Montana ski resort. Investigators are to determine the identity of the charred bodies. Also, during the fire, over 100 people, mostly young, were injured.

The cause of the fire is unclear. Swiss authorities have said that it appears to be an accident, not an attack. Some survivor accounts and footage broadcast on social media suggested the bar's basement ceiling may have caught fire due to fireworks in the form of anniversary candles.
