High-Performance interventions made at Republican Hospital of Moldova: 32 aortic endografts completed in 2025

Vascular and endovascular surgery teams in 2025 have performed 32 aortic endografts at the Republican Clinical Hospital Timofei Mosneaga. These are highly complex medical procedures, meant to save the lives of patients with severe aortic pathologies.

According to the medical institution, eight of these interventions were TEVAR, performed on patients with serious thoracic aortic conditions. Four of these cases involved aortic dissection, three – chronic aortic dissection, and one case – acute aortic dissection. The remaining procedures were EVAR, used in the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

In December alone, the Republican Clinical Hospital performed three abdominal aortic endografts, one of them using a hybrid approach, which combines open surgical techniques with endovascular ones. The three patients: men aged 52 and 66 years – suffered from atherosclerosis and aortic aneurysm, conditions that can lead to dangerous vessel dilation and a high risk of rupture.

The interventions went without complications, and the patients are in satisfactory condition, with the possibility of discharge three to four days after the procedure.

Experts explain that EVAR (Endovascular Aortic Repair) is a minimally invasive procedure in which an endograft is implanted in the abdominal aorta through arterial access in the groin, without large incisions. TEVAR (Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair) is a similar procedure used for the thoracic aorta, which allows strengthening of the vascular wall without the need to open the chest.

Among the advantages of endovascular interventions, there are the reduced risk of complications and blood loss, minimal trauma, short hospitalization – of two to three days, compared to seven to ten days in classic surgery – and rapid recovery of patients.

At the Republican Clinical Hospital Timofei Mosneaga, EVAR and TEVAR procedures have been performed since 2022, and over 70 cases have been successfully treated to date. The costs of these interventions are fully covered by the National Health Insurance Company.
