New law on weapons: digital record, mandatory training, European passport

Stricter rules for gun owners after Parliament made amendments today to the Law on weapons and ammunition for civil use.

The committee chairman, Lilian Carp, emphasized the importance of adopting the draft.

"The project was thoroughly examined, all recommendations and proposals have been integrated. These amendments will increase public safety and prevent firearm incidents," he stated.

Thus, the new provisions include:

Digital record of weapons, through the State Weapons Register, which allows tracking each weapon: production, import, repair, transfer, or destruction;

Mandatory theoretical and practical training courses for gun owners, with a minimum duration of 40 hours;

European passport for firearms, facilitating their legal transport within European Union member states.

Additionally, stricter restrictions will be imposed on individuals eligible to own weapons, including bans for those with dangerous history or residing in certain localities on the left bank of the Dniester.

Law enforcement bodies will be entitled to seize weapons in case of violations, which will be evaluated or destroyed by the State Commission.

"Adopting this law represents an important step for citizen protection and aligning our legislation with European standards. It is an effective tool for preventing illegal trafficking and reducing the risks associated with firearms," added Lilian Carp.

The law will come into force six months after publication in the Official Journal, except for the provisions regarding the European passport, which will be applicable once the Treaty of Accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union is signed.
