Moldovan education minister has talks with teachers, students from Cahul

Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun and Rector of the Technical University of Moldova (UTM), Viorel Bostan, today met teachers and students from Cahul, in order to discuss the possibility for Cahul State University 'B. P. Hasdeu to become an Integrated University Center within UTM. The initiative aims to ensure the development and modernization of the institution.

Minister Dan Perciun emphasized that this transformation had a clear goal: to create a strong and attractive university center that provides modern opportunities of study and research for the coming decades.

‘’The integration into UTM will allow the attraction of additional resources, major investments in infrastructure, and the opening of new faculties, so that we have a reference educational hub in the south of the country,’ said the minister.

Presently, the Cahul University has 879 undergraduate students, 320 of whom are full-time. Although 80 per cent of the faculty have scientific titles, between 33 per cent and 40 per cent will retire in the next five years, highlighting the importance of a sustainable development strategy. The integration into UTM will bring additional teaching staff, managerial expertise and representation in university’s leadership – four members in the board of directors, ten in the Senate and a pro-rector dedicated to coordinating development activities.

Dan Perciun noted that UTM was the most suitable institution on this process, due to its solid financial status and experience in managing resources for campus modernization.

‘’UTM can transform the Cahul University into a vibrant university center, with modern facilities, new faculties and attractive study programmes for students,’’ the minister said.

According to the Education and Research Ministry, the planned investments are estimated at 10 million lei annually, over four years, which will allow the modernization of the campus, laboratory equipment and the development of innovative study programmes. Integration will also facilitate the diversification of educational offerings, with the opening of new faculties and specialties, as well as support for attracting resources from research projects and international collaborations.
