VIDEO// Moldova, Romania join forces against organized crime
Moldova and Romania are strengthening their cooperation in the field of combating organized crime, after the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Causes (PCCOCS) and the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) of Romania signed an official Cooperation Agreement today. The ceremony took place at the Prosecutor General's Office of Moldova and marks the first document of this kind concluded by PCCOCS with a counterpart institution from another state.
The agreement aims to boost the exchange of information, facilitate direct communication and coordinate efforts between prosecutors and investigative officers from both countries. The collaboration will cover such areas as cross-border organized crime, human trafficking, drugs, cybercrime, money laundering and other serious offenses.
The interim Prosecutor General of Moldova, Alexandru Machidon, emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership.
“This Agreement represents both a confirmation of the trust between our institutions and a common commitment to combat organized crime with modern and effective tools. International cooperation is no longer an option, but a necessity and this step strengthens our institutional capabilities,” noted Machidon.
For his part, the head prosecutor of PCCOCS, Victor Furtuna, highlighted the practical nature of the agreement.
“For PCCOCS, this Agreement means faster access to the exchange of good practices and direct professional dialogue. Investigating criminal networks can no longer be limited by borders and collaboration with DIICOT, an institution with solid experience, will support us in strengthening the quality of our investigations,” said the head of PCCOCS.
The chief prosecutor of DIICOT, Alina Albu, reaffirmed Moldova's role in regional efforts to combat organized crime, noting that the document strengthens an essential partnership for both states.
