Republic of Moldova extends temporary protection mechanism for Ukrainians
The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced the initiation of the procedure to extend the temporary protection mechanism for displaced persons from Ukraine, which expires on 1 March 2026. The measure comes in the context of aligning the Republic of Moldova with EU Decision 2025/1460 on extension of the regime.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the extension of protection aims to ensure a safe and predictable environment for Ukrainian citizens who have taken refuge in our country. The institution emphasizes that it will continue to cooperate with governmental, local authorities, and international partners to effectively implement all necessary support measures.
Thus, the Republic of Moldova reaffirms its commitment to provide refugees with adequate conditions, in accordance with European standards and internationally assumed commitments.
The temporary protection mechanism in the Republic of Moldova offers Ukrainian refugees a special status, allowing them to stay legally in the country, work, study and access services. Additionally, the status grants the right to obtain an identity document free of charge, valid for the duration of protection. In the case of voluntary repatriation of the refugee or their absence from the territory of Moldova for a cumulative period of more than 45 days, the temporary protection is canceled.
On 18 January 2023, the Government of the Republic of Moldova approved the mechanism for implementing temporary protection for forcibly displaced persons from Ukraine, which came into force on 1 March 2023, and was subsequently extended.
