PCCOCS and Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office to merge

Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office and the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS) will merge. Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru made the statement today.

Some of the more complex cases of political corruption and organized crime will be examined by employees of the Anti-Corruption and Money Laundering Section within the General Prosecutor's Office.

The head of justice noted that our country has recently been facing increasingly complex forms of crime that affect national security, such as political and electoral corruption, treason and hybrid warfare.

“These manifestations have been recorded, including in recent elections, through the illegal use of financial flows and the involvement of a significant number of people in acts of corruption. It was found that criminal associations commit a wide range of corruption offenses that fall under the jurisdiction of different law enforcement agencies, with no single body to investigate the entire area of crimes,” the minister said.

Following the merger, the new institution is expected to have two subdivisions: anti-corruption and organized crime. Prosecutors working in the two institutions could be transferred to the new institution.

The minister mentioned that the number of employees in the Anti-Corruption and Money Laundering Section within the General Prosecutor's Office will also be increased.
