Green transition strategic path to European integration

High-ranking officials, national and international experts, business representatives and international organizations gathered today in Chisinau at the conference - Green Transition of the Republic of Moldova: A Driver for European Integration and Sustainable Growth, organized by the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization.

The event, held in the context of Entrepreneurship Week focused on how the green economy can become a central pillar of the Republic of Moldova's modernization and competitiveness, alongside the process of integrating into the European Union. The topics discussed included the implementation of ESG (environmental, social, governance) principles, the circular economy, and extended producer responsibility.

At the opening of the conference, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Doina Nistor emphasized that the green economy is not just a challenge, but also a strategic opportunity.

"With over 67% of exports directed to the EU, alignment with the European Green Deal principles is necessary to maintain competitiveness. The government already supports the green transition through programs such as the ODA, which has provided non-reimbursable funding of 160 million lei for 230 SMEs," Nistor mentioned.

Stephen Stork, representative of the European Union Delegation to Chisinau, highlighted the EU's continuous support in this process.

"The green transition is not a burden but a tool for modernization. We are investing in Moldova's future through the Growth Plan and other mechanisms, contributing to reforms and the development of the necessary infrastructure for a sustainable transformation," said Stephen Stork.

Daniela Gasparikova, UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova stressed the social dimension of the process.

"The green transition must be inclusive, ensuring social justice and equitable development. We support this path through concrete projects and the involvement of all stakeholders - authorities, academia, and the private sector," said Daniela Gasparikova.

The conference reinforced the consensus on the necessity of close collaboration between the public and private sectors, supported by development partners. Participants concluded that the green transition is an inevitable and promising path to the country's economic modernization and European integration, but it requires concerted efforts, investments, and long-term vision.
