PHOTO // European Commissioner visited Moldova’s Urban Search and Rescue Team: practical demonstration using EU-provided equipment

European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib visited Moldova Urban Search and Rescue Team (USAR) today, which held a practical demonstration in the presence of the European official, using equipment provided with the support of the European Union.

USAR Moldova specializes in interventions following earthquakes, building collapses and other serious emergency situations. During the European official’s visit, the team held a practical demonstration using equipment provided with the support of the European Union.

The Republic of Moldova is part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, meaning that the country can both receive support in the event of disasters and provide assistance to other countries. Cooperation through this mechanism contributes to better preparedness and to Moldova’s increasingly close integration into the European civil protection system.

During her visit to USAR Moldova, Hadja Lahbib welcomed the Republic of Moldova’s intention to advance the certification process for the Moldova USAR Team in accordance with European and international standards. This step would pave the way for the team’s integration into the European Civil Protection Pool and its participation in rescue missions alongside teams from other European countries.

Hadja Lahbib is paying first official visit to the Republic of Moldova today. The agenda includes meetings with President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and other members of the Government.

The Commissioner will also visit a refugee accommodation centre and La Strada organisation. The discussions will focus on support for victims of sexual violence and the needs of vulnerable refugees.
