VIDEO // 49-year-old man detained in Moldova for allegedly collecting information for Russian intelligence services
A 49-year-old man from Azerbaijan has been detained by law enforcement officers on suspicion of collecting information in the interests of representatives of the Russian Federation’s. He was allegedly recruited in August 2026 and, according to investigators, was being prepared to carry out acts of sabotage in Moldova and Ukraine.
According to the Police, the man was detained as part of a criminal case by officers of the National Investigation Inspectorate and the Chisinau Police Directorate, with the support of the Fulger Special Police Brigade and in cooperation with prosecutors of the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS).
According to information gathered by investigators, the suspect was allegedly monitoring military facilities of Moldova, as well as United States facilities in the country.
The information collected was allegedly meant to be transmitted to a person who supposedly acted as a handler and who, according to available data, was a representative of the special services of the Russian Federation.
Following a search, law enforcement officers seized a mobile phone. Examination of the device allegedly revealed data indicating contacts with an individual who had presented himself as an employee of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB).
The suspect was placed in pre-trial detention for 30 days. He is being investigated for the unauthorized collection of information, an offense punishable under the law by two to five years in prison.
The investigation is continuing to establish all circumstances of the case and identify all persons involved.
