Women MPs Platform held public hearings on preventing and combating violence against women and femicide

 

Chișinău, September 11, 2026 – Women MPs Platform held public hearings today on preventing and combating violence against women and femicide. Representatives of several state institutions participated in the discussions, including the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, the Superior Council of Magistracy, and the General Inspectorate of Police.

The hearings aimed to assess the existing mechanisms for protecting victims of domestic violence, identify any gaps in their implementation, and establish the measures needed to prevent cases of violence and femicide.

“The case in Măgdăcești obliges us to take the way the state intervenes, identifies, and stops violence against women with the utmost seriousness. Today, we are not here merely to talk about a tragedy, but to understand whether all the mechanisms that were supposed to protect a woman worked and, if not, where the chain of protection broke. We must determine whether these mechanisms are functional and whether institutions apply them in accordance with the law. The purpose of these hearings is to examine the situation, identify gaps in the system, and establish the concrete measures that must be taken to prevent such tragedies,” Women MPs Platform's head Marcela Adam said.

The hearings also presented measures recently taken to strengthen the protection of victims of domestic violence. Thus, the Police has been connected to the electronic monitoring system, allowing law enforcement officers, together with representatives of the National Probation Inspectorate, to monitor alerts generated by monitoring devices and reduce response times.

In addition, another 200 electronic monitoring devices are to be procured, in addition to the 300 currently available.

Representatives of the Ministry of Justice stated that a draft law introducing new mechanisms for protecting victims is currently being developed and consulted upon. These include informing the victim if the monitoring device loses its signal or if the aggressor crosses the border. The draft law will also provide for sanctions for violating a restraining order.

According to the statistics presented during the hearings, approximately 7,000 domestic violence offenders enter the prevention and monitoring system each year.
