Prosecutors to be assessed, selected by single specialized college
Chisinau, Aug. 8 /MOLDPRES/- Prosecutors will be assessed and selected by a single specialized college and not by two, as it was before. The law on improving the mechanism of selection, evaluation and disciplinary liability of prosecutors, set up by the Ministry of Justice, has already entered into force.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the new college will also have the function of evaluating, according to ethical and financial integrity criteria, prosecutors who will not fall under the scope of external evaluation (vetting).
Previously, the duties exercised by the two colleges within the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) - the Prosecutors' Performance Evaluation College and the Prosecutors' Selection and Career College - were similar and to a large extent they doubled their powers. Therefore, the new college with competences in the selection and evaluation of prosecutors will contribute to increasing efficiency and optimizing expenses.
In addition to the merger of the two colleges, the law also provides for changes such as: strengthening the independence of the Inspectorate of Prosecutors and transferring it from the subordination of the General Prosecutor's Office to the subordination of the CSP, which will give more independence to the Inspection. Due to the large number of notifications submitted to the Inspection, the number of inspectors will be increased by three people.
The law also provides for the review of the composition of the Superior Council of Prosecutors. Thus, the People's Advocate and the General Prosecutor will no longer be legal members of the CSP, starting from January 1, 2024, and the Minister of Justice - starting from January 1, 2026.
