Moldova to extradite person to India for first time; man accused of murder and drug trafficking

The Republic of Moldova will extradite a person to the Republic of India for the first time. The individual is an Indian citizen wanted internationally and involved in three criminal cases in which he is accused of murder, attempted murder, illegal use of firearms and drug trafficking.

According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, the court ruling approving the Ministry of Justice’s extradition request became final on July 16, 2026. The court also ordered that the individual be surrendered to the Indian authorities in accordance with the law.

The Indian citizen was arrested on February 24, 2026, at a state border crossing point, based on an INTERPOL notice issued upon the request of the relevant authorities in India.

Throughout the extradition proceedings, the General Prosecutor’s Office took the necessary procedural measures to ensure the individual’s presence and prevent him from evading the proceedings. At the same time, prosecutors supported the requests to impose and maintain pretrial detention until the proceedings were finally resolved.

Moldovan authorities maintained a dialogue with the relevant institutions in India, ensuring the exchange of the necessary information and documents, as well as the coordination of the legal and procedural aspects of the extradition.

According to information provided by the Indian side, the three criminal cases involving the man are currently at the trial stage. He will face the courts in India for the acts of which he is accused.

The surrender of the Indian citizen to the authorities in India is expected to take place in the coming period.
