VIDEO // Moldovan environment minister says new oil slicks currently visible on Dniester River, continuing to come from upstream

Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder today paid a visit to the bridge at Unguri, northern Ocnita district, to assess the oil pollution situation on the Dniester River. According to the official, new oil slicks are currently visible and continue to come from upstream.

“The Ukrainian side has confirmed that the source of pollution was stopped, but most likely these slicks are coming from the last settling pond, where there still appear to be volumes of oil accumulated from previous leaks. For this reason, we stay vigilant, we are constantly monitoring the situation and we will continue working in the field for as long as necessary,” said Gheorghe Hajder.

Nearby, at Arionesti, in Donduseni district, the authorities have installed a system of seven absorbent barriers, in order to limit the spread of the pollution.

As for two birds found dead on the bank of the Dniester, the official noted that specialists from the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) had gone to the site and would announce the causes of death. At the same time, continuous monitoring of the hundreds of birds present on the Dniester is underway.

Hajder also said that, on March 24, he would hold a meeting with representatives of environmental organizations and experts in the field, in order to analyze the impact of the pollution on the river and to coordinate additional intervention measures aimed at mitigating the effects of the pollution.
