Road passenger transport fares to be adjusted in Moldova

The government has approved an amendment to the Methodology for calculating fares for regular road passenger transport services on inter-district and district routes. The changes were necessary, in order to protect citizens and to ensure the working of the public transport system.

The draft provides for the introduction of a temporary mechanism for adjusting fares in the event of major fluctuations in fuel prices, which account for about 40–50 per cent of the total costs of transport operators.

The price of diesel fuel has recorded significant increases on a very short period, generating direct pressure on transport operators. Thus, the draft proposes giving the National Road Transport Agency the authority to set provisional fares, periodically adjusted according to the actual evolution of fuel prices, ensuring a rapid, transparent and predictable mechanism.

The mechanism will be applied only during periods when there are large fluctuations in fuel prices on the market. After the market stabilizes, the previous prices will be reinstated or, where appropriate, prices will be recalculated in line with the new market situation.

“This measure is not about arbitrary increases, but about avoiding real risks, including the suspension of transport routes, especially in rural areas, where public transport is essential for daily life. The government stays committed to ensuring stability, predictability and functional services for all citizens of Moldova,” said the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development.

In 2025, through a network of more than 2,055 regular routes, of which 46 per cent are inter-district and 34 per cent district routes, 113.3 million passengers were transported.
