Moldovan Foreign Affairs Ministry explains new Schengen procedures amid reported entry refusals in France, Germany
The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) informs citizens of Moldova about recent reports of difficulties when entering the territory of European Union member states and the Schengen area, particularly following more cases in which Moldovan citizens were refused entry into France and Germany.
According to the MAE, these situations are occurring also in the context of the Entry/Exit System (EES) becoming operational as of 10 April 2026, implemented at all external border crossing points of the European Union – land, air and sea. The digital system replaces passport stamping and involves the collection of biometric data from persons entering the European area, with the aim of strengthening security and preventing illegal stays.
The MAE notes that the new rules entail stricter checks for third-country nationals, including Moldovans who travel without a visa on the basis of a biometric passport. Under these conditions, there is a real risk of being refused entry, if individuals cannot clearly prove the purpose of their trip or do not meet all the legal conditions of stay.
Another frequent reason for refusal is exceeding the maximum stay of 90 days within a 180-day period, or approaching this limit. The authorities stress that using another biometric passport does not allow this rule to be circumvented.
The MAE reiterates that the final decision on granting entry lies exclusively with the border authorities of the member states and recommends that citizens check, before traveling, whether they have all necessary documents, including a return ticket, proof of accommodation, sufficient financial means and valid health insurance.
At the same time, air carriers operating flights from the Eugen Doga International Airport of Chisinau have been notified to inform passengers about the new requirements.
The Ministry urges citizens to get information from official sources and to strictly comply with the conditions of entry and stay in the European Union, in order to avoid refusals and any additional costs.
