Moldovan authorities to launch national plan for safety of journalists
The authorities of Moldova will launch, for the first time, a national plan for the safety of journalists for the period 2026–2027. Culture Minister Cristian Jardan has made statements to this effect, during an international conference dedicated to the safety of journalists, held in Chisinau.
The event took place under the auspices of the Moldovan Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and brought together international partners, including representatives of the Council of Europe, the European Commission and UNESCO. The discussions focused on current challenges in the information space and on solutions to protect journalists.
The culture minister underlined that the safety of journalists was an essential condition for the working of a democratic society.
“In recent years, we have witnessed what disinformation, manipulation and attacks on the press mean. We know where they come from and we know what they aim for, especially during election campaigns – to divide us, to weaken our trust in institutions and to divert us from our European path,” said Cristian Jardan.
According to the official, journalists play an essential role in correctly informing citizens and protecting them is a responsibility of the state. In the context, the authorities have already taken more measures, including strengthening the legal framework on the protection of journalists and boosting cooperation between institutions, civil society and the media.“The safety of journalists is vital for accurate information to reach people’s homes. We stay firmly committed to protecting press freedom and maintaining a free, pluralistic, and reliable information space,” the minister emphasized.
The National Plan for the Safety of Journalists is expected to set out concrete actions, in order to prevent and combat threats against the press in the context of an increasingly vulnerable information environment.
