Family from Orhei district of Moldova turns dwelling into energy-efficient house with support from FEERM programme

The Lisnic family from Step-Soci village, central Orhei district, has managed to transform their home into a warmer, more energy‑efficient and more comfortable space, thanks to support provided through the national programme, Energy Efficiency Fund in the Residential Sector of Moldova (FEERM), managed by the National Center for Sustainable Energy.

For this family with four children, the renovation meant more than technical works – it brought a real change to their way of life. Previously, the house was losing a lot of heat due to the lack of insulation and maintaining a comfortable temperature was difficult. Now, the home retains heat much more efficiently. During the cold season, the indoor temperature stayed constant at around 23°C, even during periods of frost.

The energy rehabilitation works included thermal insulation of the exterior walls, insulation of the plinth for protection against moisture, installation of a rainwater drainage system, mounting of energy‑efficient windows and modernization of the heating system by installing a biomass boiler with radiators throughout the house.

The investment was made largely from external sources: 50 per cent of the costs were covered by the European Union and the Government of Germany, 45 per cent by the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund, and the family’s own contribution was only 5 per cent.

The results are also visible in the family budget. Firewood consumption for heating has been cut in half – from about six stacks to three per season. “In the last winter, it was much easier to keep the house warm. You can feel the difference both in comfort and in reduced expenses,” said Roman Lisnic.

Roman works as a sales consultant, while his wife, Liliana, is a cashier at the Orhei bus station. For their family, an energy‑efficient home means not only savings, but also stability and safety for their children.

More and more households of Moldova are benefiting from such interventions, which help cut energy costs and improve living conditions over the long term.

The FEERM programme is developed by the government of Moldova, with financial support from the European Union and Germany. It is implemented by the National Center for Sustainable Energy and the Energy Ministry through the project, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy for Moldova (E4M).
