Speaker on eve of State Flag Day: With this historic flag we are joining great European family

On 27 April we celebrate State Flag Day, the symbol that defines us as a people and as a country. Under this flag we have demanded the right to our language, to our history and to independence. With this historic flag we are moving into the future, into the great European family. Speaker Igor Grosu conveyed the message at the opening of the parliamentary sitting.

The official emphasized that under this flag a strong, free and European Moldova is being built.

“State Flag Day is about all of us, about the belief that Moldova can and must succeed. The flag, just like the country, belongs to every Moldovan. Let us be proud of it and protect it,” Igor Grosu declared.

The tricolour was designated as the state flag on 27 April 1990 by the deputies of the first Parliament, and was hoisted on the same day on the building of the Legislature. State Flag Day was established by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova on 23 April 2010.

The State Flag is a major official symbol of the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova. It is a rectangular cloth, with the ratio between its height and length of 1:2, vertically divided into three equal stripes, starting from the flagpole, in the colours blue, yellow and red, and bearing in the middle of the yellow field the image of the State Coat of Arms of the Republic of Moldova, whose width is 1/5 of the length of the flag.
