The catastrophic Chernobyl nuclear disaster affected millions of lives, and its echo still resounds across generations. Speaker Igor Grosu conveyed the message at the beginning of the Legislature’s sitting, in the context of the 40th anniversary of the catastrophe, marked on April 26.

The official stressed that this tragedy represents one of the most painful episodes of the last century.

“More than 3,500 Moldovans were mobilized to take part in eliminating the consequences of the catastrophe. Many of them paid with their health or even with their lives. The catastrophe affected millions of lives, and its echo still resounds across generations. It is our duty to do everything possible to ensure that such tragic events never happen again and that people can live in peace and safety,” Igor Grosu emphasized.

On April 26, it will be 40 years since the explosion of reactor four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which affected the whole of Europe. During the fire, which burned through the reactor for ten days, huge quantities of radioactive substances were released into the atmosphere.

According to a study, almost one million people from various parts of the world died as a result of radioactive contamination. Besides the states of the former USSR, the most affected countries were Norway, Sweden, Finland, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Austria, Romania, Greece, and large parts of Germany and the United Kingdom.

In total, more than 3,500 Moldovans took part in eliminating the consequences of the accident, 1,865 of whom are still alive. The victims of the accident are commemorated annually in the Republic of Moldova. In their memory, flower-laying ceremonies and other commemorative events are organized.
