
Budget for sports federations increases by over 37 percent this year
The budget for sports federations will increase by 30 million lei this year, or by 37.5 percent, reaching a total of 87 million lei.
Each federation will be funded based on criteria related to performances achieved in European and international competitions, the number of participants in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, and the rankings of our athletes in the world standings.
The Ministry of Education and Research announced that the largest financial allocations for 2025 were given to the Wrestling, Canoe-Kayak, Weightlifting, Judo for Disabled Persons and Judo Federations.
The Wrestling Federation will have a budget of 10,380,897 lei. It had seven participants in the Paris Olympics, earning a silver medal. Moreover, Moldovan wrestlers won 60 medals in international competitions, and eight athletes ended last year in the top 10 of their weight categories worldwide.
The Canoe-Kayak Federation will have a budget of 8,356,393 lei. At the Paris Summer Olympics, the federation was represented by three athletes and won a bronze medal. Additionally, athletes from this federation won eight medals in international competitions. The federation has eight athletes ranked in the top ten in the world standings.
The Judo Federation for Persons with Disabilities was allocated a budget of 7,842,882 lei. Moldova was represented at the Paris Paralympic Games by three judokas, who won a bronze and a silver medal. Throughout 2024, athletes from the Judo Federation for Persons with Disabilities won four medals in international tournaments, with two of them finishing the previous year among the top 10 in the world rankings.
The Judo Federation received 7,606,541 lei for this year. At the Summer Olympics, our country was represented by three judokas, who won two bronze medals. They also obtained three other distinctions at the European and World Championships in 2024. Two Moldovan judokas were ranked in the world top 10 in their weight categories by the end of last year.
According to the new funding mechanism, federations that had participants in the latest edition of the Olympic or Paralympic Games received an additional 200,000 lei for each federation and 100,000 lei for each participating athlete.
In 2024, our country achieved a record number of medals in international competitions - 731 in total, compared to 545 in 2023.
There are approximately 70 sports federations operating in the Republic of Moldova.
