Chisinau-based theatres represent Moldova at 2026 Shakespeare International Festival in Craiova, Romania
The theatres of Chisinau have represented Moldova on the stage of the 2026 Shakespeare International Festival in Craiova. This is one of the most important theatre events in Europe, with performances presented in Craiova, Bucharest and Sibiu, strengthening the presence of Moldovan artists on the international cultural circuit.
Teatrul Fără Nume (Theatre without a Name) and the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre took part in this year’s edition of the festival with the productions, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Mihai Țărnă, and Richard III, directed by Petru Hadarca, offering audiences contemporary reinterpretations of William Shakespeare’s work.
The performances were staged both in Craiova and in Bucharest, on the stage of the Ion Luca Caragiale National Theatre, while Richard III was also included in the programme of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival.
The two productions propose contemporary readings of Shakespearean dramaturgy: A Midsummer Night’s Dream explores the universe of love and illusion, while Richard III follows the rise and fall of a leader driven by ambition and a thirst for power.
The 15th edition of the 2026 Shakespeare International Festival in Craiova brought together over 450 performances and cultural events, confirming its status as a major landmark on the European theatre scene.
