Moldovan president conveys congratulatory message to renowned Romanian filmmaker

President Maia Sandu today sent a congratulatory message to Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu for winning his second Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival with the film “Fjord.”

“It is a great joy to see a renowned filmmaker, with roots in Moldova, who, through originality and authenticity, creates memorable films that move and inspire audiences across the entire continent,” Maia Sandu said.

The Moldovan president emphasized that Cristian Mungiu’s films are, above all, debates about the values that define us as a society.

“This ability to raise essential questions with honesty and artistic courage is what once again brings him recognition on the world’s most prestigious cinematic stage,” Maia Sandu noted.

The feature film “Fjord”, directed by Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, won the Palme d’Or trophy at the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. Romanian director and screenwriter Cristian Mungiu thus became the 10th filmmaker in the history of the Cannes Film Festival to win the much-coveted Palme d’Or twice – 19 years after his victory with the film “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” in 2007. No filmmaker has ever won this award three times.

“Fjord” is a film about the difficulty of understanding someone who thinks differently, a story about polarization, about the inability to engage in dialogue, about the things that divide people and the ones which still keep them together, according to the event’s official website.
