National Library inaugurates exhibition on identity of Romanian language in European context

The National Library of the Republic of Moldova, on the occasion of the national holidays, is organizing a topic-related exhibition titled, The Identity of the Romanian Language in the European Context, open to the public as of August 25 till October 25. The exhibition aims to showcase documents from the National Library's collections, reflecting the contribution of the Romanian language, the official language in the EU since 2007, spoken by over 25 million people.

The exhibition brings together 280 valuable documents, systematized into thematic sections, highlighting the role and evolution of the Romanian language as a Latin-origin language, as well as the contribution of Bessarabian personalities to the European culture. Visitors will be able to discover documents about the Romanic origins of the language, its historical formation process, the recognition of Romanian as an official language of the European Union and its impact on national identity.

‘’The Romanian Language Day, marked on August 31, is an opportunity to reflect on the history and linguistic richness of our language, which shines like a linguistic jewel in Eastern Europe. With a rich heritage and a fascinating evolution, Romanian serves not only as a means of communication, but also as a symbol of national identity and Romanian culture,’’ reads the National Library's communiqué.

The exhibition shows not only the history of the Romanian language, but also the contribution of Bessarabians to the European cultural and scientific heritage, bringing to the forefront prominent personalities, such as Dimitrie Cantemir, Nicolae Iorga, Mihai Eminescu and Eugeniu Coseriu.

This initiative represents an invitation to reflect on the linguistic and cultural identity of the Romanians, integrated into the European context today.
