Moldovan president delivers speech at reception given on occasion of Independence Day

The Republic of Moldova aims with determination to become a member state of the European Union by the end of this decade. In her speech at the official reception organized on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Moldova, the head of state emphasized that the country had the "chance and historical openness" to join the safest and most prosperous space of peace, freedom and justice in the world.

"This week we celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Moldova, a celebration that gives us the opportunity for reflection, gratitude, and commitment to our future. Over the past three and a half decades, Moldova has undergone deep trials and transformations. We set out with a brave vision – to have a free, democratic state, settled within the family of European nations," said Maia Sandu.

Maia Sandu said that the European future of Moldova was becoming increasingly clear and the path - irreversible:

"Today, we can proudly say that this vision is on its way to becoming reality. We have taken decisive steps to get closer to the European Union: we have got the candidate country status and have officially started accession negotiations. We are preparing with determination and hard work to become a member state by the end of this decade. We have the chance and historical openness for the Republic of Moldova to be part of the safest and most prosperous space of peace, freedom, and justice in the world."

Another aspect highlighted by the president is the energy independence and the strengthening of the Republic of Moldova's role on the international stage.

"We have made huge progress on the path to energy independence. Today, we can firmly say that no one can dictate our destiny through energy blackmail. The Republic of Moldova has become a respected state internationally. We are heard and appreciated in important capitals and our voice matters within the democratic European family. This recognition did not come about on its own, but was earned through seriousness and the courage to uphold the values in which we believe," the head of state noted.

In her speech, Maia Sandu also referred to the investments made in recent years in infrastructure, education and health:

"We have made unprecedented investments in roads, in sustainable development projects and Moldova is increasingly taking on the appearance of a European country. In education and health, we have begun substantive changes, so that each child has the chance of a quality education and each patient is treated with respect and professionalism."

At the same time, the president emphasized the efforts made to maintain peace and support provided to Ukrainian refugees:

"Most importantly, we have managed, in the face of a brutal and unjust war on our border, to maintain peace. We have consolidated our institutions and capabilities to better respond to security threats. Through active diplomacy, we ensured that peace can continue to be protected. We can be proud that Moldova has opened its hearts and homes to those fleeing the war."

President Maia Sandu concluded her message with a call for unity and confidence:

"We have reasons to be grateful to those who fought for independence and to be worthy of this path we continue together. Independence means freedom, responsibility and the power to build our European future with our own hands."

On August 27, the Republic of Moldova will celebrate 34 years of independence. On this day in 1991, the parliament of Moldova adopted the Declaration of Independence, through which the Republic of Moldova detached from the Soviet Union and asserted itself as a sovereign state. This is one of the most important national holidays, representing freedom, unity and the aspiration of the people towards a European future.
