PM says Moldovan farmers must be wealthy, competitive on international markets

The government of Moldova reaffirms its commitment to support agriculture and local farmers through investments, subsidies and grants, aimed at increasing the sector's competitiveness internationally. Prime Minister Dorin Recean emphasized that cabinet’s goal was for Moldovan farmers "to be wealthy, run successful businesses and produce competitive goods sought after on markets worldwide."

"The PM has always said that he wants Moldovan farmers to be wealthy, to have competitive products sought after globally and to run successful businesses. The government is acting in this direction through subsidies, grants and support for modernization. We also regularly fund many successful micro-, small-, and medium agricultural enterprises," said the spokesperson for the government, Daniel Voda.

At the same time, the government urged representatives of the agricultural sector to bring constructive proposals on the platform of the Economic Council, where the Farmers' Force Association is a member.

"Those who claim to know everything, but have refused to do anything concrete for farmers from a public position have a completely different agenda than the   declared one. We expect concrete proposals on behalf of the Association," noted the government’s representative.

Thus, the authorities say that they will continue to support the modernization of agriculture and the strengthening of Moldovan farmers, so that they can withstand external competition and contribute to the country's economic development.

On August 22, during an Economic Council meeting, Prime Minister Dorin Recean reportedly stated that it does not matter whether the approximately 1.7 million hectares of agricultural land in the country are cultivated by 1,000 or 3,000 economic agents. The Farmers' Force Association deemed the statement cynical and outrageous and asked the prime minister to retract his statement or publicly apologize.
