Deputy Minister: We ready to open EU accession negotiations for first group of chapters

The Republic of Moldova has completed bilateral screening for five groups of chapters and is ready for the rounds of discussions scheduled for September. Deputy Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov made the statement today. She emphasized that the next step is to open negotiations on the first group of chapters concerning fundamental values, and EU member states are expected to make a decision on the matter in the near future.

'We appreciate the support of our partners in this process, especially that of civil society, business community and diaspora who actively contribute to this arduous work. The efforts we make on our European path are primarily for the people,' the official stated.

According to Cristina Gherasimov, the reforms promoted by the authorities bring tangible benefits for citizens – from fair justice and functional institutions to accessible public services and an economy with opportunities for all.

'Judicial reform is making palpable progress, even if slower than we would have liked. It is about functional self-governing institutions, real actions to eliminate corrupt elements in the justice system, measures that strengthen integrity among prosecutors and judges, and legislative changes that allow for the extended confiscation of assets,' Gherasimov said.

In the economic sector, the deputy minister mentioned that the opening towards the European market is very visible.

'More than two-thirds of Moldova's exports are directed towards the European Union. We have joined the single euro payments area for more efficient transfers and, starting from January 1, 2026, we will be part of the 'roaming like at home' zone,' the official emphasized.

The official also highlighted progress in the energy sector. 'We continue to diversify sources, to strengthen our capacities so that energy can no longer be used as a tool of pressure against our citizens,' Gherasimov said.

At the same time, Cristina Gherasimov warned that the European path of the Republic of Moldova is vulnerable.

'The parliamentary elections on 28 September represent a important test for the stability and European path of the country. Protecting the electoral process against external influences and dirty financing is an absolute priority for us, and we need tools and support to ensure a free and fair election,' the deputy minister pointed out.
