Moldova moved up in press freedom ranking

The Republic of Moldova climbs to 31st place, up four positions, in the 2026 Press Freedom Index of the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF). This is the best score among EU candidate countries and the only country in Eastern Europe with a “satisfactory” status. The announcement was made today by President Maia Sandu, who welcomed the result.

According to the RSF assessment, the progress reflects improvements in the media environment and the authorities’ efforts to strengthen press freedom.

“There is still much work to be done, but we are on the right track,” emphasized Maia Sandu.

The Republic of Moldova has risen from 35th to 31st place compared to last year. Thus, our country surpasses states such as Romania (49th), Ukraine (55th), the USA (64th), and Italy (56th).

Norway remains at the top of the ranking in first place, followed by the Netherlands and Estonia. At the bottom of the list are North Korea (179th) and the Russian Federation (172nd).
