Around one thousand freelancers registered within a month of new tax regime taking effect

Around one thousand citizens chose to work legally, simply and with low taxes, using the new freelancers’ regime in the first month after its launch. Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Eugeniu Osmochescu made the statement today.

"Within a month, we already have almost 1,000 self-employed people registered, with their business in order. What was the reason we created this new tax regime? It is very simple. This regime does not involve direct interaction with the state on the part of those who want to grow their businesses. This regime is completely online and is beneficial for all citizens of the Republic of Moldova who later wish to grow into a larger business, with jobs and increased investment," stated Eugeniu Osmochescu at a press conference.

The official emphasized that the authorities are currently holding consultation sessions dedicated to independent entrepreneurs, during which people interested in the new tax regime can get answers to all their questions.

The Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization published this week the Independent Entrepreneur (Freelancer) Guide, which describes five steps that allow any citizen of the Republic of Moldova to benefit from a new tax regime.

Registration as an independent entrepreneur is done online via the MPass system, using an electronic signature. After completing the registration procedure, the independent entrepreneur can immediately start activity and receive income without invoices, tax receipts or accounting, as long as payments are made through non-cash payment instruments.

At the same time, the independent entrepreneur is required to pay a single tax of 15% on income up to 1.2 million lei per year, and 35% on the portion that exceeds this threshold. In their activity, freelancers are not required to submit tax or statistical reports.

Any citizen of the Republic of Moldova who carries out independent economic activities in the field of service provision can become a freelancer, in areas such as IT, design, photography, creative work, consulting, architecture, craftsmanship, cleaning services and other activities expressly provided by law.

The new tax regime was introduced on January 1, 2026, by the Government to simplify starting a business for citizens of the Republic of Moldova. The measure is part of a broader program to cut red tape and digitize the relationship between entrepreneurs and the state.
