Cristina Pereteatcu at European Innovation Summit: Moldova has shown that it can be example of adaptation and innovation

In just two and a half years, the Republic of Moldova has shown that even a small country can become an example of adaptation and innovation. This message was conveyed by State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy Cristina Pereteatcu at the European Innovation Summit 2025, held in Copenhagen.

The event brought together government leaders, technology companies, investors, and energy experts to discuss innovative solutions that can accelerate the EU's energy transition.

In the panel dedicated to the priorities of Moldova's energy strategy in the context of geopolitical changes, Cristina Pereteatcu spoke about the deep transformation that the country's energy sector has undergone in recent years.

'The geopolitical situation forced us to act quickly and decisively. In just two and a half years, we moved energy mountains, proving that even a small country can become an example of adaptation and innovation when there is vision and solid partnerships,' stated the State Secretary.

The National Energy Strategy until 2050 and the new Digital Transformation Program 2026–2030 aim for the full integration of the national energy system with the European ENTSO-E network, diversification of energy sources, and acceleration of the transition to renewable sources. Thus, Moldova aims to have at least 30% of all energy consumed come from renewable sources by 2030, alongside the development of smart grids and storage infrastructure.

An essential role in this transformation is played by the Energy Sandbox, which positions Moldova as the first country in the Eastern Partnership to test clean technology solutions in a regulated environment, including smart microgrids and the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) system, where energy stored in electric vehicles can be fed back into the grid.

'For Moldova, digitalization and decarbonization are not two separate roads – they represent the same path to modernization. We are building a secure, interoperable, data-driven energy infrastructure that allows consumers to become active participants in the energy market,' said Cristina Pereteatcu.

The State Secretary also spoke about the opportunity to build a fruitful collaboration with Schneider Electric, one of the global leaders in technological solutions for automation and energy efficiency. The company has already expressed interest in testing next-generation technologies for smart grids, electric mobility, and building consumption optimization in the Sandbox platform in Moldova.

'Schneider Electric is a pioneer in energy innovation. It's an event where I discover solutions that can be tested at home, in Moldova. I also saw another example, a bidirectional charger for electric cars, a technology that we will be able to integrate into our V2G project,' added Cristina Pereteatcu.

The Vehicle-to-Grid technology will be tested in the Republic of Moldova by Green City Lab in the innovative energy testing space, Sandbox. Additionally, the Ministry of Energy has initiated the process of drafting a Government Decision that will detail the project owner, scope, and duration.

The European Innovation Summit 2025 was held in Copenhagen in a crucial context for countries in the region. The event proposed discussing the urgent need for decarbonization of the European energy system while maintaining security and affordability.
