Romania, Moldova closer in energy sector: Transelectrica company initiates construction of two 400 kV power lines connecting Suceava to Balti

The Romanian National Company of Electric Energy Transport of Transelectrica has commenced work on two major energy infrastructure projects in northern Romania, aimed at strengthening national energy security and interconnection with Moldova.

The two investments target the construction of the 400 kV overhead power lines Gadalin – Suceava and Suceava (Romania) – Balti (Moldova). Together, they will complete the 400 kV Ring in northern Romania – a strategic component of the national electricity transport network – and will contribute to the integration of the Moldovan electric energy system into the European one.

The technical launch meeting took place in Suceava, led by Stefanita Munteanu, President of Transelectrica's Directorate, along with the company's investment team and representatives from Electromontaj stock company, the main contractor responsible for carrying out the works.

‘’These are two historically significant projects, meat to close the 400 kV Ring in the northern area and, at the same time, provide Romania a new strategic interconnection with Moldova. Through these investments, we strengthen energy security, create conditions for economic development in the northeast region, and reinforce Romania's position as a provider of stability in the region,’’ said Stefanita Munteanu.

The Gadalin – Suceava line is intended to complete the 400 kV transport infrastructure in the northern part of the country, ensuring a more balanced distribution of energy flows. The Suceava – Balti line will be one of the main Romania–Moldova cross-border connections, facilitating bidirectional energy exchange and the gradual integration of the Moldovan system into the European ENTSO-E network. The projects are part of the national energy transport network development plan for the period 2024–2030 and are included in the regional interconnection programmes backed by the European Union.

By completing these investments, Transelectrica aims to enhance the reliability of the Romanian electric energy system, reduce the risk of power supply interruptions and contribute to the consolidation of the regional energy market in Southeast Europe.

Romania and Moldova actively collaborate in the energy sector, especially in order to diversify sources and ensure the energy independence of Chisinau. In recent years, electrical network interconnection has become a strategic priority, complementing the already existing cooperation in the natural gas sector.
