High-level meeting in Luxembourg: Energy Minister: Moldova can become solid pillar in regional energy architecture

The Republic of Moldova can become a solid pillar in the regional energy architecture—a reliable partner contributing to Europe's stability and sustainability. Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu made the statement at the EU's TTE Energy Council meeting held on Monday in Luxembourg.

During the high-level meeting, energy ministers from EU member states discussed the energy security of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, and supported the elimination of Russian gas imports by 2028, according to the REPowerEU plan. The Republic of Moldova was invited for the first time to participate in this event.

“Today, Moldova no longer depends on Russian energy resources. We have diversified our supply sources, modernized our systems, and taken decisive steps towards integration into the European energy market. We are convinced that Moldova can become a solid pillar in the regional energy architecture—a trustworthy partner contributing to Europe's stability and sustainability,” Junghietu said. The official emphasized that the Republic of Moldova has gone through one of the deepest stages of change in its history, successfully transforming the energy crises caused by Russia into opportunities for economic development and strengthening energy independence.

Dorin Junghietu reiterated that Moldova plays an active role in establishing a common tariff for natural gas transportation through the Vertical Corridor to Ukrainian storage facilities, thus contributing to the supply of the neighboring country with gas, creating a competitive model for suppliers, and strengthening the energy security of countries in Southeast Europe.

At the same time, Junghietu expressed gratitude for the constant support provided by the European Union to our country for modernizing the energy sector and highlighted recent progress made by the Republic of Moldova towards European integration.

“Every megawatt produced from renewable sources, every reform implemented, and every new interconnection represents a sure step towards a Moldova fully integrated into the European energy space. Moldova is ready to make its contribution—with determination, responsibility, and the firm belief that our future is European,” concluded the minister.

The European Commission adopted the REPowerEU roadmap, which outlines a phased approach to gradually eliminate remaining energy imports from Russia and to strengthen the European Union's independence and energy security. At the same time, this summer, the Commission proposed the gradual elimination of natural gas imports via pipelines and LNG from Russia, with a total ban by January 1, 2028.
