The Romanian Writers' Society of Bessarabia has marked 105 years since its foundation today. The society is the predecessor of the Writers' Union of Moldova (1920-2025).
The festive event was attended by the two presidents of the Writers' Union from both banks of the Prut, Varujan Vosganian and Teo Chiriac, along with former presidents of the union, academicians, literary critics, researchers and representatives of cultural institutions and the diplomatic environment.
The participants highlighted the fundamental role of the institution and writers in the process of National Revival and reconnecting with the values of the European space to which Moldova belongs.
Thus, the agenda included the launch of a photographic exhibition and a brochure illustrating significant moments in the life of the institution, as well as debates at three topic-related panels dedicated to the role of the Writers' Union in contemporary society, including from the perspective of developing relations with other creative unions.
On October 22, at a proposal by the Romanian Embassy, President of Romania Nicusor Dan signed a decree for the conferment of the Cultural Merit Order in the rank of Knight, Category A – "Literature", to the Non-Governmental Association Writers' Union of Moldova, as a high appreciation for efforts in promoting Romanian culture, for contributions in the fields of creation, criticism and literary history, as well as for the promotion of the Romanian literature in Moldova.
