Passengers of Chisinau-based Eugen Doga International Airport to be able to reach city center by train

Passengers of the Chisinau Eugen Doga International Airport will be able to reach the city center by train. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) is preparing a project to launch a train route connecting the airport with the railway station. Deputy Prime Minister, Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Vladimir Bolea has made statements to this effect.

The official noted that the airport was experiencing dynamic development and this year, a number of 6 million passengers transported might be reached. Under these conditions, authorities aim to create conditions for efficient management of passengers’ flow by expanding the airport terminal and launching a train route connecting the airport with the city center.

‘’We are currently working on interconnecting the airport with the railway station. On Friday, a train set out from the central station to Revaca station, covering the distance from the city center to Revaca station at a speed of 20 km/h in 12 minutes and another 10 minutes to the city of Sangera,’’ said Vladimir Bolea at a show on the public television channel.

According to the official, the project involves modernizing the stations to prepare them for receiving passengers and evaluating the railway lines.

'By spring, we will prepare both the stations to meet passengers’ reception requirements and audit these several dozens of railway lines, so that the average speed is 50 km on this segment, allowing the airport's many passengers to be carried by train,’’ the deputy PM emphasized.

The Chisinau-based Eugen Doga International Airport returned to state management in the spring of 2023. Authorities have earlier informed about the modernization of the airport’s infrastructure and attraction of investments, in order to enhance capacity and services’ quality, in a state-managed regime that is transparent and oriented toward public interest.

Presently, the Chisinau Airport ranks among the top-performing airports in Europe in the category of 1-10 million passengers per year. The growth is supported by the expansion of the route network and the increase in the number of airlines, which grew from 20 in 2022 to 33 in 2024.
