Farmers in Ștefan Vodă to be able to irrigate over 2,500 ha thanks to $8.4 million investment
Farmers in Ștefan Vodă district will benefit from a project to modernize irrigation systems, aimed at ensuring access to water for agricultural crops. The contract for rehabilitation of irrigation infrastructure in Crocmaz and Căplani worth about $8.4 million was signed today, marking a new investment in the agricultural sector.
The project includes the modernization of two pumping stations, the construction of 50 km of pipelines, and the installation of 119 aluminum hydrants. The rehabilitation of irrigation infrastructure in Ștefan Vodă district will provide water for over 2,500 hectares of agricultural land, primarily dedicated to fruit and vegetable crops.
“This moment is extremely important for the agriculture of the Republic of Moldova. The rehabilitation of irrigation systems is a long-term investment, crucial to facing climate challenges and ensuring food security,” Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Ludmila Catlabuga said.
The works will start in two weeks, as soon as weather conditions allow the opening of the site, and in two years, farmers will have access to a new irrigation system.
Farmers in the region have expressed enthusiasm and hope on the project's implementation.
“The project is welcome and long-awaited. Water is vital, and this project is the only solution for the future of our agriculture,” stated Anatoli Grosu, president of the Water User Association for Irrigation Irig-Com.
The investment is supported by the World Bank under the Agriculture Governance, Growth and Resilience Investment project.
