Moldova continues to increase renewable energy generation capacity, with solar power leading way

Moldova is continuously increasing its renewable energy generation capacity. In the first quarter of 2026, 58.75 MW of new capacity was installed, reaching a total of 1,039.74 MW.

According to data by the National Center for Sustainable Energy (CNED), out of the total new capacity installed in this quarter, 51.43 MW is accounted for by photovoltaic power plants, 6 MW - by wind power plants, and 1.32 MW - by biogas installations.

In late last March, of the 1.04 GW installed, photovoltaic installations with a total installed capacity of 759.79 MW are the most widespread technology and represent 73 per cent of the total installed renewable electricity capacity. They are followed by wind installations, whose total capacity reached 254.72 MW at the end of March 2026, representing 24 per cent of the total. Biogas installation capacities increased by 1.315 MW in last March, reaching a total of 8.475 MW (2 per cent), while hydropower capacities stand at 16.75 MW (1 per cent).

According to statistics data, over the last five years, the installed capacity of green energy has increased 13.23 times.

Moldova has set the goal of reaching a 30 per cent share of renewable energy in electricity consumption and 27 per cent of renewable energy in final energy consumption by 2030. In 2024, the share of renewable electricity was 16.7 per cent and the authorities estimate that it will increase to 27 per cent in 2026.
