Government allocates 50 million lei to compensate losses suffered by farmers affected by drought and heat in 2025

The Government decided today to allocate 50 million lei to partially compensate the losses suffered by farmers affected by the drought and heat in 2025 for corn and sunflower crops.

The resources will be allocated from the National Fund for the Development of Agriculture and Rural Areas.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Ludmila Catlabuga said at the Government meeting that through this mechanism the authorities provide direct support to farmers who have suffered major losses for areas affected by at least 50%, and in the case of partial damage – proportionally to the degree of damage. The project sets clear and transparent procedures for submitting applications through AIPA, the eligibility criteria, and the documents required to access financial support.

“Beyond figures and mechanisms, this project is about people. In recent years, more and more young people and families have returned home, invested in agriculture, and chosen to build their future here at home, in the Republic of Moldova. Unfortunately, many of these farmers started this activity during this period, right after extremely difficult agricultural years, and this support is a clear message that the state does not leave them alone in the face of these climate crises and that their work, their courage to return home and to invest in the Republic of Moldova matters,” Catlabuga said.

At the same time, Ludmila Catlabuga added that the ministry is developing the national resilience program in agriculture in order to have a clearer and more predictable long-term vision for adapting to climate change.

“Our goal is to gradually move from these reactive interventions and loss compensations to sustainable investments in irrigation, modern technologies, resistant varieties, water management and resilient agricultural infrastructure. We need to build agriculture that can provide us with a resilient sector, one that can survive a difficult year and not be dependent on the climatic situation,” Ludmila Catlabuga said.

“We are doing everything possible to help farmers,” emphasized Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.

According to the Regulation on the allocation of funds, financial aid is granted to applicants who have recorded losses in corn and sunflower crops in 2025 as a result of natural disasters. The support will be offered through the Agency for Intervention and Payments in Agriculture. The calculation of the amount of compensation per applicant is carried out by the Agency based on the assessment reports and the consolidated report.

The financial aid is granted to applicants in the form of a direct payment per hectare of land. Support is provided if, according to the assessment reports, the degree of damage to the corn and/or sunflower crop caused by natural disasters is at least 50% for the year 2025.

The drought of 2025 caused losses in corn and sunflower crops.
