Vehicle registration to be suspended in case of major defects or upon expiry of technical inspection

Vehicle registration will be suspended in case of major defects or upon expiry of the technical inspection. This provision is included in a draft law approved today by the Government.

State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Victor Grosu said at the Government meeting that the draft means greater road safety, preventing vehicles with technical problems from entering traffic, limiting the circulation of polluting vehicles, and reducing the risk of accidents.

“A simple rule is being proposed. If a vehicle no longer meets the technical requirements, it can no longer be used temporarily in traffic. At present, this situation is not clearly regulated, there is no separate measure to stop the use of such vehicles, and control is limited,” said Victor Grosu.

The draft introduces suspension of registration as a temporary measure. This means that the vehicle can no longer be used in traffic until the problems are remedied, without its registration being cancelled. The measure applies when the technical inspection expires, when major or dangerous technical defects are detected during the periodic technical inspection, or directly in traffic following an inspection.

The draft also provides clear rules on suspension, automatic record-keeping in the state vehicle register, a 30-day period for remedying problems, restoration of the right to be driven after confirmation of technical compliance, data exchange on inspections, and penalties for using vehicles with suspended registration.

“The direct benefits are: fewer accidents caused by technical faults, greater safety for road users, reduced pollution, alignment with EU practices, and greater responsibility from vehicle owners,” said the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The new rules will apply six months after the draft law is published in the Official Journal, giving everyone time to comply.
