Union Highway: eight bids submitted for design, construction of final section reaching Moldova

The Infrastructure and Regional Development Ministry (MIDR) today said that eight bids had been submitted for the design and construction of section 4 of the A8 Union Highway, Targu Neamt – Iasi – Ungheni. This refers to the last 15 km towards the border with Moldova, which will connect to the Bridge of Flowers across the Prut River at Ungheni via a 2.77-km link road and 5.5 km on the territory of Moldova.

The project includes a 15-km route, 14 bridges and overpasses, and 2 tunnels, the longest of which will have a length of 1,700 m. It also provides for 2 road interchanges: one serving the Regional Hospital and Iasi Airport, and the Golaiesti interchange, as well as a 2.77-km connecting road between the Golaiesti interchange and the Bridge of Flowers over the Prut at Ungheni.

At the same time, the first kilometers of highway on the territory of Moldova (4.7 km) are to be built, along with a connection to the future multimodal logistics hub – the subject of a joint funding application by the two countries. The logistics hub will be developed on an 18-hectare site at Beresti station (Ungheni district) and is designed as a key point on the eastern border of the European Union.

The contract has a duration of 46 months, including 10 months for the design phase and 36 months for the construction phase. The project is financed through the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) Programme, and the tender procedure is managed by Romania’s National Road Investment Company.

The A8 Highway and its cross-border connections are not just infrastructure investments, but investments in the European future of Moldova. It is also known as the Union Highway – a strategic project that will link eastern Romania with the western part of the country and with Moldova, through the Ungheni border crossing point.

A key element of the project is the road bridge across the Prut River at Ungheni, symbolically called the Bridge of Flowers, whose construction started on 26 April 2025. The bridge will provide direct crossing of the border and will facilitate the movement of goods and passengers, contributing to boosted economic exchanges and increased cross-border mobility.
