President Maia Sandu has paid an official visit to Poland, at an invitation by President of Poland Karol Nawrocki. The visit reconfirmed the strength of the Moldovan-Polish partnership, Poland’s steady support for the European path of  Moldova and the shared commitment to strengthening regional security in a context marked by Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the boosting of hybrid threats.

During the visit, the head of state also had meetings with Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk, Marshal of the Senate Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska and the Marshal of the Sejm Włodzimierz Czarzasty. The discussions focused on deepening political dialogue, developing economic cooperation and strengthening parliamentary support for the European agenda of Moldova.

“Poland and Moldova share a partnership of more than three decades, built on trust, solidarity and a common understanding of the realities in our region,” said President Maia Sandu at a news conference with her Polish counterpart. The head of state expressed confidence that this partnership “will continue to grow stronger – politically, economically and strategically.”

The Moldovan president highlighted Poland’s support for strengthening Moldova’s resilience and reaffirmed the country’s firm commitment to European integration, stressing that “joining the European Union is the clearest guarantee of security, democracy and freedom for Moldova.”

An important topic of the talks in Warsaw was cooperation in the field of defense. “We are working on updating and deepening the bilateral defense cooperation agreement, so that it reflects the current security environment and strengthens cooperation between our institutions,” said President Maia Sandu. She noted, in this regard, the fight against hybrid threats and the protection of critical infrastructure.

The sides also addressed the cooperation in the field of historical memory. In this context, President Maia Sandu visited the Katyn Museum, dedicated to documenting the 1940 Katyn massacre committed by the Soviet regime in the Smolensk region, where approximately 22,000 Polish officers and intellectuals were executed. The visit underscored the importance of preserving historical memory as an essential element of democratic resilience. “When we speak honestly about tragedies, we build a stronger and more resilient society, one that knows what it must protect,” President Maia Sandu noted.

The official visit to Warsaw confirms the commitment of Moldova and Poland to cooperation, solidarity and steadfast support for Ukraine. “In a world marked by pressure and division, Poland and Moldova choose cooperation,” concluded President Maia Sandu.
