Moldova introduces smart transport: digital tickets and fast payments via apps

Stations, buses and trains will be equipped with modern electronic payment systems, allowing passengers to purchase tickets directly on board or online, check real-time schedules and seat availability, and make payments via bank cards, mobile devices or cash. All these will be possible within a pilot project aimed at modernizing interregional road and rail transport.

In this regard, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) between Visa, Moldova Railway company, Real Estate Management Directorate and the National Road Transport Agency (ANTA). The national expansion of the project will depend on the results of the first testing phase.

“This is an important step towards digitalizing payments, increasing transparency, and improving the quality of services offered to passengers. Through this collaboration, we are laying the foundation for a safer, more comfortable, and more efficient transport system, aligned with European standards,” said Mircea Păscăluță, State Secretary for Transport at MIDR, during the signing ceremony.

According to MIDR, the project contributes to the automation of ticket sales processes, enhances operational efficiency, and ensures uniform taxation in public transport. Looking ahead, the model could be extended, on a voluntary basis, to transport operators throughout the country.

Alongside the launch of the pilot phase, a mobile app developed with the support of Visa will be available, enabling passengers to purchase tickets quickly and securely directly from their mobile phones.

“Visa is honored to contribute to the digital transformation of interregional transport in the Republic of Moldova. Through our global experience in digital payments, we support the development of modern and secure solutions that simplify the travel experience and stimulate the local economy. This project marks an important step towards integrating digital services in public transport,” emphasized Diana Kiguradze, Visa's Regional Manager for Moldova and Caucasus.

The signing partners agreed to collaborate in a spirit of transparency, respecting data protection legislation and confidentiality of information.

The Memorandum does not imply direct commercial obligations, which are to be established through subsequent agreements based on the performance of the pilot project and the interest of transport operators.
