More cities to have modern and accessible courtyards: Government expands European Courtyard program

Government approved today the expansion of the national program 'European Courtyard', which will be implemented in more cities across the Republic of Moldova starting in 2026. For each rehabilitated courtyard, a budget of up to five million lei will be allocated, aiming to modernize the spaces between buildings, creating accessible, safe, and friendly zones for residents.

According to Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) Vladimir Bolea, the program represents an example of participatory democracy, where residents decide which investments are priorities, and the authorities fund their implementation.

'They decide what is important - playgrounds, sidewalks, parking lots, green spaces, or accessibility. We fund, and they choose the priorities,' said Vladimir Bolea.

So far, 57 courtyards in Chișinău are included in the project and are at various stages of execution. The expanded list is set to include 381 eligible courtyards in the capital, which will be incorporated into a single government document, representing the official commitment to their rehabilitation. Currently, 39 courtyards are under construction, and for another 17, tenders will be relaunched due to a lack of bidders.

The minister emphasized that many areas require infrastructure repairs beneath the asphalt, which is why paving will be chosen - a durable solution that allows for future interventions without damaging the aesthetic works.

The government will also expand the program to other areas in the country.

'European courtyards will also appear in Cahul, Căușeni, Hâncești, and other cities. We want to bring European urban culture closer to every community,' said the deputy prime minister.

Under the European Courtyard program, each rehabilitated area can be equipped with accessible sidewalks and alleys, modern street lighting, arranged parking lots, safe playgrounds, expanded green spaces, ramps for people with disabilities, urban furniture. The program emphasizes quality, accessibility, and safety, aiming to create modern, friendly living spaces adapted to the needs of residents of all ages.
