Prime Minister urges citizens to use energy rationally: To avoid paying higher costs, we must save

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan has urged citizens to use electricity rationally in the context of the risks of an electricity deficit caused by the complicated regional situation. The official stressed that this is necessary also in order not to pay higher energy costs.

He underlined the importance of saving both energy and water, in the context of global challenges.

The official noted that covering the energy deficit in certain time intervals requires purchasing it at higher prices on the exchange.


“I would like to thank the colleagues who came yesterday with messages regarding the need to reduce energy consumption. This is an important subject and, unfortunately, I believe it is a subject that will reappear on the agenda more and more often. Yesterday, despite our attempts to save, more than 130 MWh of energy were used between 21:00 and 23:00. And this means that we had to buy this energy at very high prices, two or three times more expensive on the exchange. Because there is an energy deficit in Hungary, in Romania, and in Bulgaria as well. These are chain problems. The energy supply will become increasingly scarce and we must all ensure that, in order not to pay higher prices, we switch off the lights and are more economical with lighting, especially in the evening. I want to once again encourage all Moldovans, as this concerns our common money, to be as responsible as possible with energy. And the same applies to water. Both the issue of water and the issue of energy will be increasingly present on the public agenda. It is in the interest of all of us, and I am confident that we will show responsibility, including in the way we use energy and water,” said Vasile Tofan.


The authorities announced that for Tuesday evening, August 4, between 21:00 and 23:00, an estimated electricity deficit of 130 MWh was expected. Under these conditions, officials urged citizens to save energy so as not to have to purchase it at higher prices.
