Romania interested in purchasing Giurgiulesti Port
Prime Minister of Romania Ilie Bolojan discussed with a delegation from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) about Giurgiulesti Port in the Republic of Moldova, which is under an international acquisition process.
According to a press release of the Government of Bucharest, Romania expresses interest in this endeavor with the aim of regional development.
“The Romanian side expressed interest in involvement in this endeavor, in coordination with the Republic of Moldova, with the common objective of supporting regional development and connectivity on the Danube and the Black Sea,” the cited source said.
In mid-April, the EBRD, the owner of the Giurgiulesti International Free Port, initiated the international bidding process to identify potential investors who can further support the development of the main maritime and river port of the Republic of Moldova.
Subsequently, the EBRD announced that it had received several offers from regional and international investors for the acquisition of the Port and is in advanced negotiations with the selected bidders.
In mid-July, the Council for Examining Investments of Importance for State Security approved the request of the National Company Maritime Port Authority Constanta, Romania, to acquire Danube Logistics, the operator of the Giurgiulesti International Free Port.
Since 2021, the EBRD has been the sole owner of Danube Logistics, the port's operator.
The Giurgiulesti Port is a strategic logistics hub offering importers and exporters transshipment and storage services, with access to a tri-modal transport infrastructure.
The port is located on the maritime sector of the Danube River and allows the docking of river and sea vessels with a draft of up to 7 m and a capacity of up to 10,000 tons. As the country's main port, it manages over 70% of Moldova's external waterborne trade, ensuring supply chains for various types of goods and bringing significant benefits to the Moldovan economy.
