Moldovan deputy PM has meeting with European Commissioner for Enlargement

Moldova is ready to switch to the opening of negotiation clusters, in the context that the country has successfully completed the bilateral screening stage. Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihai Popsoi today conveyed a message to this effect during a meeting with Marta Kos, European Commissioner for Enlargement, in Luxembourg.

The officials exchanged opinions on the next steps in Moldova’s process of accession to the European Union, with a focus on foreign policy, security and defense. At the same time, the Moldovan diplomacy head expressed gratitude to the European Union for the assistance provided to the country on its European path, including through the Economic Growth Plan for Moldova.

“We welcome the positive assessment on behalf of the European Commission of the progress made by Moldova in the process of accession to the European Union. We are ready to move to the opening of negotiation clusters, following the successful completion of the bilateral screening stage,” said Mihai Popsoi.

For her part, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos encouraged Moldovan authorities “to maintain the pace of implementation of necessary reforms for advancing on the EU accession path.” They will be evaluated in the annual report of the European Commission’s Enlargement Package, planned for publication this autumn. At the same time, the EU official reiterated the European Commission’s determination to continue supporting Moldova through expertise, assistance and gradual access to EU instruments and programmes.

During the meeting, the sides also discussed the holding of the election on September 28, 2025, focusing on lessons learned in organizing free and fair elections. In the context, Deputy PM Mihai Popsoi thanked the European Union for its support in enhancing the capacities of national authorities in charge of managing hybrid threats, including in the areas of cybersecurity and combating disinformation.

Mihai Popsoi is attending the meeting of foreign affairs ministers on interregional security and connectivity, organized in Luxembourg, on the sidelines of the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting.

At the ministerial meeting, Mihai Popsoi will have a string of bilateral meetings with counterparts from EU member states, as well as with partners outside the European Union.
