Ruling party's candidate for PM office says Moldova of interest to USA

The candidate of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) for the position of prime minister, Alexandru Munteanu, says that Moldova stays a partner of interest for the United States of America, despite Washington's global priorities. He referred, in this context, to a recent 130-million-dollars grant provided by the American Government for the construction of the Straseni–Gutinas power line, just a week before the parliamentary elections.

“Currently, the USA's attention is focused on resolving global wars, but I don’t believe that Moldova is not of economic interest. The 130-million-dollar grant provided to Moldova is not a small amount, especially at a time when American authorities are promoting optimizations and reductions in personnel expenses,” Munteanu said at on TV8.

At the same time, the PAS candidate confirmed that he held the U.S. citizenship, along with citizenship of Moldova and Romania, noting that he had got it in 2006 after living in the United States with his family for a while.

“I was impressed by the American economy; I like this country. I have two sons who work there. Holding Moldovan citizenship does not contradict the U.S. law. I continue to pay taxes regardless of where I am,” he specified.

Referring to the meeting with President of France Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, held in Chișinău on Moldova’s Independence Day, Alexandru Munteanu said that he had participated as president of the French Alliance, not as a political representative.

“I had the opportunity to talk to Emmanuel Macron in French, but we did not discuss politics. The dialogue focused on the future of Moldova and the region,” Munteanu said.

As for his plans as the future prime minister, Alexandru Munteanu emphasized that economic development and attracting investments would be his priorities, along with supporting socially vulnerable groups, quality education and access to modern medical services.

“It is a unique moment in which we can all make a contribution. We truly have a bright future,” he stressed.

Alexandru Munteanu is the candidate of the Action and Solidarity Party, which won the parliamentary elections on September 28, for the position of prime minister. Munteanu confirmed that the offer had been made to him by President Maia Sandu.
